Every great story begins somewhere, and this one starts with a secret - one that would change everything.

In the summer of 1952 my parents, John (Jack, in Seattle sailing circles) Seaborn and my mother, Nora Hitchman Moore (an esteemed Oregon and United States attorney) met. They met (in of all places) a psychiatric hospital in Everett, Washington.

My dad (to be) was recovering from an emotional breakdown from the death of his first wife from ovarian cancer. My mother (to be) was recovering from a double whammy: (a) the sudden death (from prostate cancer) of her beloved and adored father and (b) that she had returned to her Portland home from her law office to find her first husband in bed in the midst of a sexual interlude...with another man.

Meeting each other, both emotionally vulnerable, seemed to both John and Nora a god-send.

However, my dad (to be) had a "secret".

Beyond the emotional breakdown he was going through from the death of his first wife, John Seaborn had a mental illness that caused unprovoked and uncontrollable rages of violence. A factor that my my mother (to be) did not know of when he proposed and she said "I will marry you, John."

Their wedding was on Halloween in the home of John's mother. Who herself was a very evil person. In fact, it was my grandmother (to be) who had insisted on the date of Halloween. Given the terrifying horrors that were to come, the date of this marriage on Halloween of 1952 should have been an omen of what was to come.
